Treatment Foster Care

Children from around the state of Maine come into care for reasons of abuse, neglect and abandonment. Currently, there are not enough foster homes to meet the needs of these children. More foster parents are needed throughout the state that can provide a safe haven for these children.

The Department of Health and Human Services refers children, birth to 18, who have suffered traumas, abuse, neglect or abandonment to Community Health and Counseling Services for placement in a treatment foster care home. The children in the program have a wide range of emotional and behavioral challenges. Some have medical needs, while others may have developmental delays or disabilities.

Consideration of placement is based on a number of factors. Most important, is the match between the child’s needs and the strength of the foster family. The foster family always has the final say for who is placed in their homes.
